There as many different types of cranes as there are uses for them. Some of the most common types are Gantry Cranes, Jib Cranes, Bridge Cranes, and Forklift Crane Attachments. Each one of these types comes in different styles for specific applications.
Starting with the gantry crane, there are two basic types of this crane. There are fixed height and adjustable height. You can get these cranes in aluminum or steel to meet the needs of specific applications. Most gantry cranes have two uprights with a cross beam and casters to make them mobile. This type of crane can be used for a variety of purposes. One common use in the manufacturing industry is to move large molds or parts in and out of process equipment. Warehouse and other industrial applications often use this type of crane to move materials over short or long distances within a work area. With capacities generally ranging from 500 â€" 8,000 pounds this type of crane can be a workhorse in the material handling area. The span of this type of crane usually ranges from 8 â€" 20'. The fixed height gantry cranes generally come in a standard under beam height of 10', while the adjustable height gantry crane will generally come with a 7 â€" 16' height range.
The next style of crane is the jib crane. The jib crane comes in a very wide variety of styles to fit many applications. Jib cranes can come in both portable and fixed position models. Fixed position jib cranes are generally used in a work area to pick up parts and other materials from a cart or other delivery method and moved onto a workstation. Most jib cranes will have an upright beam and then an I-beam cross member where a trolley and hoist would be attached for moving material. These stationary jib cranes can have a cross beam that stays in the same position as well as a 360 degree beam. The 360 degree beam enables the user more versatility for placement of products moved with the crane. This style of crane can come in lift heights generally ranging from 8 â€" 14 feet. And can have capacities ranging from 500 â€" 6,000 pounds. Mobile jib cranes also come in a couple different styles. The most common style is sometimes also known as an engine hoist. Although this style is commonly used as an engine hoist it can serve many other applications. Another style of mobile jib crane is the counter balance cranes. This style crane is mounted on a cart that has a built in counter balance system to keep the crane stable while lifting to the weight capacities. This style of crane is useful when you desire to move products or items from one place to another with the ease of using a cart. Capacities and lifting ranges for this style can vary greatly.
Bridge cranes are used when you will have a need for lifting and moving heavy items on regular bases over the same span. This type of crane is generally custom made to fit the needs of the user. There are a couple different styles when it comes to bridge cranes. They can be attached to an existing structure and a bridge will ride on the rails. Another style is a self-supporting crane. This style of crane will have upright beams that support the rail and bridge. There are some â€oestandard” models of this type of crane that if they fit your needs can save you on the cost of the crane over custom manufacturing.
The last type of crane are forklift crane attachments. This type is used frequently in warehouse and logistic facilities to move products from one place to another by a forklift operator. This type of attachment can be telescoping and pivoting to meet your needs. Capacities for this type of attachment vary on the specific style, but generally range from 1,000 â€" 8,000 pounds. These capacities also have to be in compliance with the capacity of your forklift as well.
As you can see there are a great variety of cranes to suit the equally vast uses for them. If you are unsure of what type of equipment to best work for you consult an equipment expert to help guide you. Manufacturer reps and distributors can be a great source for this.
